SUMMARY:Creating clear and concise climate change and health communication
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is a global phenomenon that poses significant risks to public health but communicating these risks can be challenging given the complexity of the science findings\, unfamiliar terminology\, and technical jargon. The ENBEL consortium\, a collaboration of research projects dedicated to climate change and health\, produced dozens of scientific publications\, yet one challenge was how to condense and synthesize findings into clear\, concise formats. Plain language factsheets that translate research findings from climate change research into accessible information for a broader audience are one tool that can be used to effectively convey complex information. Using this approach\, ENBEL developed a research factsheet series dedicated to ‘Climate Change and Health’ that synthesized study findings produced by fourteen ENBEL projects. The series covers fourteen themes including topics such as heat\, heart\, lung disease\, and air pollution\, diarrheal disease\, schistosomiasis\, vector-borne disease\, the heat impact on pregnant women and newborns\, early warning systems\, and non-traditional chronic kidney disease\, to name a few. The formatting of the series was designed by a graphic design specialist and all factsheets were reviewed by relevant ENBEL researchers to ensure scientific accuracy. The aim of the series is to raise awareness of these issues and facilitate understanding among non-experts\, encouraging informed decision-making based on the evidence. This series expands the reach of ENBEL’s research beyond the scientific community\, fostering greater societal impact. The series holds potential for global stakeholders\, including national public health institutes\, regional organizations such as Africa CDC\, and global networks including the International Association of National Public Health Institutes. This presentation will discuss the development methods\, what worked\, and the dissemination process used to promote the utilization of this series among a broad range of national\, regional and global stakeholders.

SUMMARY:Producing ultra-rapid contextualized evidence syntheses to inform pressing climate-change challenges
DESCRIPTION:Addressing the climate change crisis requires global cooperation to implement solutions that are informed by the best-available evidence. As emphasized by the Global Commission on Evidence\, this requires investing in the global evidence architecture for a suite of living evidence syntheses (LESs) on priority questions (including climate change)\, and leveraging technology to enable LESs to be harnessed to address climate change priorities. This is particularly important in situations where decision-makers must determine how best to urgently respond to climate-related emergencies such as wildfires that recently affected many countries in 2023. Addressing urgent priorities such as this requires domestic evidence-support units to be able produce ultra-rapid evidence syntheses that draw on what is known from routinely updated LESs and contextualized with insights from local evidence\, specific interventions\, priority populations and/or experiences from other countries. Our team has developed an approach for providing ultra-rapid contextualized evidence syntheses that: 1) engage subject-matter experts to scope the question and consider relevant context; 2) identify highly relevant evidence from existing evidence syntheses and key single studies; 2) assess evidence for relevance (using a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive framework of decision-relevant considerations about the challenge faced) and methodological quality; 3) document experiences from other countries that can be used to contextualize the findings; and 4) provide a profile of evidence and experiences that focuses on identifying coverage by and gaps in existing evidence syntheses\, key insights from the most relevant evidence documents and priorities for next steps. We will present our model for evidence support\, and insights about how we were able to respond to a series of urgent climate change priorities in Canada in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without harnessing the global evidence architecture in the form of a machine-learning enabled evidence map of global research on climate and health.

SUMMARY:Creating a model for preventing occupational heat stress in a world experiencing climate change
DESCRIPTION:Occupational heat stress poses significant challenges to workers and businesses. As the effects of climate change worsen\, the world must adapt faster. Higher ambient temperatures and heat waves lead to higher incidences of occupational heat-related illnesses and injuries among the workforce\, including heat exhaustion\, heat stroke\, accidents\, acute kidney injury\, and subsequent fatal chronic kidney disease of non-traditional cause (CKDnt). La Isla Network (LIN) and its team of researchers have developed a model to prevent these from occurring through funding provided by Germany’s GIZ\, BMZ\, and DEG that developed the Adelante Initiative and Center of Excellence (CoE) at a sugar mill facing severe issues with heat stress and its consequences in its supply chain in Nicaragua. Through the CoE\, we conduct research and build evidence on-site\, which is translated into practice and policy. Through the Adelante Initiative\, we have dispelled biases that occupational health interventions harm the bottom line. We have demonstrated that evidence-based interventions of rest\, shade\, hydration\, and sanitation\, coupled with changes in organizational management reduced harm\, decreasing the incidence of acute kidney injury by 94% over four harvest seasons\, increased the productivity of workers by as much as 20%\, despite working fewer hours\, and provided a 22% return-on-investment for the company implementing the programs. These results demonstrate that reducing harm\, increasing productivity\, and providing an ROI are all interconnected aspects of a successful intervention addressing occupational heat stress. Today we are scaling our approach through the PREP 4 Change program in several sugarcane mills in Mesoamerica and developing similar programs based on our methodology for construction workers in the USA and migrant laborers supplying fruit and vegetables from Spain for major German and British grocery chains\, which will also help German suppliers comply with the German SCDDA. As the climate warms\, these programs will be increasingly important.

SUMMARY:Promoting evidence informed policymaking on the climate and health nexus: Insights into two policy research projects
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, there has been increasing research on and attention for the climate-health nexus. There is no longer a lack of scientific evidence on the impacts of climate change on human health\, wellbeing and vice versa. However\, the available knowledge is not yet sufficiently applied and integrated into policymaking. To date\, health policies remain siloed and simultaneously\, health has only played a minor role in climate policy. Yet\, there are co-benefits when climate and health policies are being pursued coherently. Incorporating a health perspective into (climate) policy can help to generate support from public and policy-makers for more ambitious climate policies. To shed a light on how climate and health are currently and can be potentially integrated in policy-making\, we will present preliminary findings from two research projects focusing on the integration of climate and health policy and governance: (1) preliminary findings from expert interviews with policy-makers in Germany that are conducted as part of a multi-country study generating insights into the national climate and health policy ecosystem in diverse geographies to drive climate action among policy stakeholders\, led by the Centre for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University. (2) Preliminary findings from the PHONIC project\, a collaboration with the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich as well as the Helmholtz Centre Munich\, assessing and prioritizing public health operations to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The project aims to (i) identify and analyse the available evidence by conducting a scoping review; (ii) develop a practical guidance for decision-makers with a set of indicators evaluating transformative leadership and governance by conducting expert consultations; (iii) pilot the developed guidance in Germany and in Kenya for identifying strengths and gaps in the respective system by facilitating stakeholder workshops. Both projects aim to strengthen the knowledge base to develop a climate-health governance structure in Germany.

SUMMARY:Mapping the evidence of novel plant-based foods: A systematic review of nutritional\, health\, and environmental impacts in high-income countries
DESCRIPTION:Background: Shifting from current dietary patterns to diets rich in plant-based PB) foods and lower in animal-based foods (ABF) is generally regarded as a suitable strategy to improve nutritional health and reduce environmental impacts. Despite the recent growth in supply and demand of novel plant-based foods (NPBF)\, a comprehensive overview is lacking. Objectives: The aim of this review is to synthesise available evidence\, highlight challenges\, inform public health and environmental strategies and inform purposeful political decision making\, by systematically searching\, analysing and summarising the literature. Methods: We rigorously searched five peer-reviewed databases and grey literature sources for publications (2016 – 2022) that addressed the nutrient composition\, health effects\, and carbon footprints of NPBF in high-income countries. Results: We identified 57 peer-reviewed and 36 grey literature sources. We observed that NPBF typically have substantially lower environmental impacts than ABF\, but the nutritional contents are complex and varied considerably across brands\, product type and main primary ingredient. In the limited evidence on the health impacts\, shifts from ABF to PB meats were associated with positive health outcomes. However\, for PB drinks it was more mixed\, with some linked to micronutrient deficiencies. Conclusion: If carefully selected\, certain NPBF have the potential to be a healthier and nutrient-rich alternative to ABF\, and typically have lower environmental footprints. More disaggregated categorisation of various types of NPBF would be a helpful step in guiding consumers and key stakeholders to make informed decisions. Recommendations: To enable informed policymaking on the inclusion of NPBF in dietary transitions as part of a wider net-zero and health strategy\, future priorities should include nutritional food standards\, labelling and sub-division/categorisations of NPBF\, as well as short and long-term studies evaluating the health impacts on dietary shifts from ABF to NPBF and standardised environmental impact assessments\, ideally from independent funders.

SUMMARY:Database coverage of primary studies included in evidence syntheses on climate-health
DESCRIPTION:Background\nHigh-quality evidence syntheses (ES) on climate-health are vital for policy making. To inform ES search methods it is important to assess the relevance of literature databases for this topic. \nObjectives\nOur aim was to assess the database coverage of a comprehensive set of primary studies included in published ES on climate-health. We investigated their coverage in PubMed and assessed if studies not indexed in PubMed were available in the Global Health database. \nMethods\nWe searched for climate-health related ES in MEDLINE\, Embase\, CINAHL\, Cochrane Library and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses in February 2021. The search yielded 8614 records after deduplication. 110 climate-health related ES were identified. We extracted all primary studies from the first 79 ES\, sorted by number of included studies. As climate change impacts human health via several pathways\, we classified each study according to exposure pathway. We examined the availability of each study in PubMed\, and if this was not the case\, we tested its availability in Global Health. \nResults\nWe extracted 2324 primary studies\, of which 1936 were relevant to a specific climate-health exposure pathway. The range of primary studies available for our analysis per pathway was 73 to 439. For three pathways (air quality\, heat stress\, water quality & quantity) PubMed coverage was very high\, at 91-94%. For another three pathways PubMed coverage was between 81-82% (extreme weather events\, food supply & safety\, vector distribution & ecology). Only the social factors pathway had an exceptionally low PubMed coverage of 40%. Half of the studies not available in PubMed were indexed in the Global Health database. \nConclusions\nPubMed coverage of climate-health primary studies is mostly comprehensive\, with a marked variability between three pathway clusters. Global Health can be recommended as secondary database. For some pathways additional sources are needed to identify all relevant studies.

SUMMARY:Evidence mapping - Quantitative synthesis/meta-analysis Systematic review of effectiveness of interventions to reduce carbon-emissions within secondary healthcare: issues with conducting reliable primary research and identifying trustworthy findings
DESCRIPTION:Healthcare services contribute 1% -5% towards global environmental impacts. The Climate Change Act (2008) set targets for the 100% reduction of 1990 carbon emission level in England by 2050.3 Work identifying and delivering interventions to reduce carbon emissions within healthcare supply chains and models of care delivery\, is underway.\nTo complement this work\, we aimed to systematically review primary-evidence examining intervention effectiveness in reducing the carbon footprint for medical specialities within secondary healthcare settings. We searched four bibliographic databases covering health care and environmental sciences\, including MEDLINE and Embase\, Environment Complete and Science Citation Index database. We conducted backward/forward citation searching and searched relevant websites\, Google Search\, and checked relevant systematic reviews\, and the Healthcare Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) database. Two reviewers independently undertook title and abstract and full-text screening\, resolving disagreements through discussion. One reviewer data-extracted all studies\, and quality-appraised LCA studies with a tool based upon Weideima’s guidelines\, which was checked by a second. Findings were tabulated and synthesised narratively.\n88 studies (92 articles) met eligibility criteria across five intervention categories: Accessing care (n=39)\, Product level (n=22)\, Multiple (n=10)\, Care Delivery (n=9) and Setting (n=12). Urology (n=14)\, Gastroenterology (n=13) and Oncology/Radiation oncology (n=13) were the most common specialities represented. 25 articles used LCA methods\, with the highest number in urology product-level interventions (n=7). The most common type of intervention was telemedicine (n=26\, including 3 LCAs). Studies conducted using LCA and non-LCA methods contained common methodological flaws\, making it difficult to accurately determine the systemic impact of interventions intended to reduce carbon-emissions. This has important implications regarding a) ensuring those conducting carbon-emission reduction projects within healthcare settings possess the required skills/knowledge on how to do so b) reflecting on how policy makers can best make use of the evidence available and c) ensuring future research addresses the methodological limitations identified.

SUMMARY:Double Impact: Reducing low-value care - A win-win for patients and the planet: A rapid scoping review
DESCRIPTION:Background: The health care industry is the fifth-largest contributor worldwide to CO2 emissions. Therefore\, health systems need to curb CO2 emissions to become environmentally sustainable. We conducted a scoping review to identify literature on (1) the environmental impacts of de-implementation of low-value health care (LVC) and (2) the environmental sustainability of alternative solutions for health care (e.g.\, devices\, medications).\nMethods: We searched Ovid MEDLINE® and Scopus (Elsevier) from January 2015 up to 19 June 2023 and consulted experts as additional search strategy. We conducted dual and then single reviewing against a priori defined criteria. One reviewer extracted data\, and a second reviewer checked approximately 10% of the data extractions. We used summary statistics to describe the results narratively.\nResults: We included 187 articles. Among those\, seven studies focussed on de-implementation of LVC (e.g.\, laboratory tests\, diagnostic imaging procedures). The other identified studies examined the following health care practices in relation to their environmental impacts: consultation – travel/telecare (32%)\, surgical and medical devices (26%)\, medication (25%)\, surgical procedures (19%) and diagnostic tests/screening/imaging (13%). Life cycle assessments and other modelling studies were the most applied study designs. Most studies were conducted in Europe (48%)\, followed by the USA (37%)\, Australia (9%) and Canada (4%). 75% of the studies were published after 2020. The reported outcomes fell into the following categories: global warming (89%)\, other negative environmental impact (35%)\, resource consumption (28%)\, and chemical hazards (22%).\nConclusion: We identified a steady rise in publications on this topic since 2020. This is indicative of a large and growing scientific interest in environmental sustainability and may be useful as base for further action. De-implementation of LVC seems to be beneficial in two respects: It protects patients from useless or even harmful interventions and can also reduce CO2 emissions of health care.

SUMMARY:The effectiveness of mobile app-based interventions in nudging towards sustainable and healthy diets: a systematic review and meta-analysis
DESCRIPTION:One third of all greenhouse gas emissions come from the way we produce and consume food\, and current diets are insufficient to meet environmental and health goals. Given the ubiquity of smartphone usage\, apps delivering effective\, engaging nudges could be a scalable and promising solution. However\, the complexity of apps makes it difficult for stakeholders to prioritise. This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the effectiveness of mobile apps for promoting sustainable dietary consumption across five food groups.\nSeven electronic databases (MEDLINE\, EMBASE\, PsycINFO\, CINAHL\, Global Health\, GreenFILE\, Web of Science) and two trial registries (Cochrane Trials and Clinicaltrials.gov) were systematically searched for interventional studies\, characterised according to their use of strategies to facilitate behaviour change.\nFourteen of 5261 identified records were included\, comprising 12 randomised controlled trials and two pre-post trials\, with a total of 7826 participants and sample sizes ranging from 17 to 5062. Five studies recruited the general population\, three recruited students\, and six recruited overweight or obese adults\, three of which targeted lower socioeconomic groups. Interventions lasted from three days to 24 weeks\, with the most common strategy being self-monitoring\, followed by messaging\, goal-setting\, and social support. An increase was observed in daily fruit and vegetable consumption (0.43 servings\, 95% CI 0.18\, 0.68)\, vegetables separately (0.35 servings\, 95% CI 0.07\, 0.63)\, and legumes (0.04 servings\, 95% CI 0.01\, 0.08)\, with smaller increases in fruit (0.03 servings\, 95% CI 0.01\, 0.05) and meat consumption (-0.03 servings\, 95% CI -0.06\, -0.01).\nOur findings indicate that smartphone apps could play a role in accelerating dietary change\, particularly for fruits\, vegetables\, and legumes\, but these changes alone will not make diets more sustainable without meat and dairy reduction. These insights could be used by health practitioners and policymakers when considering apps in their suite of solutions for improving climate and health.

SUMMARY:Impact assessment of food-system policies
DESCRIPTION:Current food systems are neither healthy\, nor sustainable. Without changes towards healthier and more sustainable food systems\, it is unlikely that dangerous levels of climate change can be avoided. In my presentation\, I provide an overview of food-system policies that can contribute to transforming food systems. This includes analyses of the health and environmental implications of a set of informational and fiscal policies. They include changes in dietary guidelines\, the emissions or health pricing of foods\, reforms of value-added taxation\, reform of agricultural subsidies\, and reform of trade agreements. For each of these policies\, I will discuss their potential impacts at global and regional levels based on quantitative modelling assessments I have conducted.

SUMMARY:Climate risk assessment and project planning for agri-food system development: An interactive tool for identifying promising adaptation options
DESCRIPTION:Adaptation to climate change in the agriculture sector is a complex challenge due to the many different negative effects on food production caused by climate variability and change. Using an impact chain approach can help agricultural development program planners understand the network of interlinked challenges facing farmers\, but developing these chains and identifying appropriate adaptation options is a time- and resource-intensive process. This session will present the development of an interactive data exploration and data visualisation tool created to aid project planners in mainstreaming climate adaptation considerations in their agricultural programming using an impact chain approach and ontology-based data access (OBDA) technology. The resulting tool\, dubbed Climate Risk Planning and Managing Tool for Development Programmes in Agri-Food Systems\, or simply CRISP\, uses a curated repository of peer-reviewed and scientific literature combined with expert opinion on climatic hazards\, impacts\, vulnerabilities and adaptation options in agriculture for a wide range of agricultural systems across the developing world. This presentation will give an overview of the development of the tool\, the challenges faced and how they were addressed\, and will use short case study examples to showcase the tool’s potential.

SUMMARY:Geospatial Impact Evaluation of Agricultural Intensification Program in Niger
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is exacerbating food insecurity around the world\, particularly in drought-prone areas that are already highly vulnerable\, such as the Sahel region of West Africa. To improve food security and resilience\, the government of Niger\, with funding from the West African Development Bank (BOAD)\, implemented a multi-faceted agricultural production intensification program in 2011 (PIPA/SA). We employ geospatial data (spectral indices from Landsat-7 imagery) and a synthetic difference-in-differences (SDID) design to measure the impact of this program (irrigation and land rehabilitation efforts) on agricultural production\, water availability\, siltation\, and desertification (using proxies for “level of greenness” such as NDVI\, SAVI\, etc.). Determining the impact of this program will inform the Government of Niger’s future policy and programming related to climate change mitigation/adaptation and food intensification\, with implications for human health\, nutrition\, livelihoods\, and economic development more broadly. \nThis project contributes to the evidence base on climate and nutrition interventions\, and provides more evidence on the benefits and application of geospatial/remote sensing data in climate-related impact evaluation.

SUMMARY:Urban form features determine spatio-temporal variation of ambient temperature: Assessing the transferability of land Use classes effect across diverse Urban Contexts
DESCRIPTION:Driven by ongoing urbanization and accelerated global warming\, urban heat stress develops into a major threat for a large part of the world population. While the literature is clear about the relevance of urban form in modifying urban heat\, the spatially explicit context of heat modifications by the built environment is insufficiently explored across cities. Here we develop a consistent methodology based on a machine learning model to determine the predictive features of urban form that shape urban ambient temperature (AT) under different urban and climate conditions. For this\, we combine urban climate data at 100 m resolution from the UrbClim model with urban form features computed from different open datasets. We exemplify our innovation by evaluating summer daytime and nighttime temperature variation within three European cities that are representative of distinct geographies and climates: Berlin\, Zürich\, and Sevilla. Mean AT at dense urban spots was higher by 3 ◦C (on average) during summer\ncompared to sub-urban sites across all cities. We find that urban form features explain around 2/3 of within-city temperature variations. Vegetation cover and water bodies are most significant in explaining spatial temperature patterns during the daytime\, while the impervious land cover is most critical at nighttime. Cooling effect of water areas can accumulate to – 1.5 ◦C\, while heating effects of roads can induce +0.5 ◦C during daytime. The magnitude of effects varies across cities\, primarily based on the climate type\, altitude\, and dominant land-cover. However\, further testing should be conducted to develop a better understanding of impact variations. The findings of this research will provide urban planners and policymakers with crucial insights towards heat mitigation and sustainable urban developments through region-tailored modifications and replacement of land-cover.

SUMMARY:Current challenges in agricultural intensification and land use change in Latin America: land sparing\, land sharing\, rebound effect\, and leakage.
DESCRIPTION:Humanity faces a double threat: burgeoning food demand from a growing population and ecological degradation fueled by agricultural expansion. Crop production can be increased through cropland expansion (more land)\, and crop intensification (producing more per unit of cropland). Embracing sustainable intensification on existing agricultural land rather than the unsustainable quest for ever-greater acreage has been proposed. This approach is known as land-sparing. Nevertheless\, there is a risk that land sparing can lead to a rebound effect where increased yields lead to increased demand for agricultural products\, which in turn drives further expansion of cropland. In addition to these challenges\, there is also the risk of leakage\, where land use change in an area is caused by land use change in another area. This can happen when global markets allow for the transfer of agricultural products from one region to another. With 23% of the world’s arable land\, 46% of tropical forests\, and 31% of freshwater\, Latin America possesses unparalleled potential for revolutionizing food production. By embracing sustainable intensification and conserving natural ecosystems\, the region can nourish a growing population without further deforestation\, protect vital ecosystems\, safeguard biodiversity mitigating climate change\, and become a global leader in sustainable food production. While studies have explored land sparing\, land sharing\, rebound effects\, and leakage in Latin America\, significant regional gaps remain. Existing research often lacks integration into the causes and consequences of these phenomena in diverse local contexts and potential pathways for the effective implementation of sustainable solutions. This study employs an evidence synthesis approach (https://asreview.nl/) to comprehensively analyze the existing literature. Our goal is to identify the main drivers and consequences of crop expansion and intensification across Latin America exploring potential pathways for policy implementation that fosters sustainable food production while protecting the environment.

DESCRIPTION:In November/December 2023\, the Pacific Climate Change Centre (PCCC\, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)) along with Melbourne Climate Futures (MCF) and the Climate CATCH Lab at the University of Melbourne (UoM)\, partnered to deliver a six-week program on climate\, health\, and equity training to 15 Fellows (cross-sectoral policy makers and interdisciplinary researchers) from across the Pacific and Southeast Asia. The training program enabled knowledge exchange and enhanced capabilities through mentoring and the development of country-specific policy/practice climate solutions for implementation post-program. PCCC and MCF will host a follow-up four-day workshop in March 2024 to further support implementation of climate solutions\, identify and prepare relevant collaborative funding opportunities\, and progress joint publications for consideration in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). \nThis session will include a panel of participating Fellows who will share their insights on advancing climate solutions for improved health and equity outcomes in countries and communities that are highly vulnerable to climate-related impacts. The session will demonstrate the multiple benefits of bringing together interdisciplinary\, multi-sector\, cross-country cohorts to learn from one another on climate and health. The session also provides a platform to elevate regional voices on climate and health\, and will examine the avenues and mechanisms available for continued knowledge exchange and meaningful collaboration to inform local\, national\, regional and international climate solutions.

DESCRIPTION:In funding research in the climate and health field\, economic evaluation has come up as critical evidence that policymakers need to identify and develop effective policy for climate and health. However\, there are gaps in research capacity to deliver the evidence needed. \nMost economists either work on health or climate/environment economic analysis and they are speaking different ‘languages’. To deliver interdisciplinary climate and health economic analysis\, they will need to work together to build the evidence base. \nExisting methods exist for economic evaluation\, but are developed and used in silos. There is a lack of globally applied\, consistent\, comparable approaches for economic analysis of the health impacts of climate action. There is a need to bring together existing approaches and provide guidance on when\, why and how to use them\, include understanding and communicating uncertainties and limitations.

SUMMARY:Supporting the evaluation and evidence synthesis landscape in climate and health in low- and middle-income countries
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is one of the biggest threats currently facing humanity. It is a is a global threat to stability. With its impacts in the form of extreme weather events and rising water body levels\, climate change exposes present and future generations to lifelong health and livelihood harm\, particularly in regions with low adaptive and resilience capacity. Exposure to increased frequency and intensity of severe weather\, such as flooding and drought\, are leading to tormenting risks\, as the occurrences of water-borne and vectorborne diseases and malnutrition-related illnesses are aggravated.\nClimate change is worsening already tight resource constraints through more extreme and variable weather and decreasing average yields. Sub-Saharan Africa is confronted with a range of climate risks that could have far-reaching consequences for its health systems in future. Rapid and uncertain changes in rainfall and temperature patterns markedly threaten agricultural production\, increase the vulnerability of smallholders\, and accentuate rural poverty that threats health and livelihoods. Under 2°C warming\, the existing variations in water availability across the region could become more pronounced (World Bank; 2013). In southern Africa\, annual precipitation is projected to decrease by up to 30 percent under 4°C warming\, while parts of southern and west Africa may see decreases in groundwater recharge rates of 50–70 percent. This could lead to substantial increase in drought risks. Similarly\, strong warming and an ambiguous precipitation signal are projected to increase drought risk over central Africa. The 2011 Horn of Africa drought\, particularly severe in Kenya and Somalia\, is consistent with an increased probability of long-rains failure under the influence of human-induced climate change (World Bank\, 2013).\nResponding to these challenges will require better knowledge and evidence synthesis that can promote better policy and actions that would improve health and livelihoods.
